The Director’s Guild of Korea (DGK) has unveiled the nominees for the 23rd Director’s Cut Awards, with actor Yoo Ah-in—who faced a drug-related scandal—listed among the contenders for Best Actor in the film category.
Scheduled for May 20, the awards recognize outstanding films and drama series released between January 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024. Unlike most industry accolades, the winners are determined through voting by fellow filmmakers who are regular or associate members of the DGK.
Since its inception in 2000, the Director’s Cut Awards have celebrated cinematic achievements. A drama series category was introduced in 2022, expanding the scope of recognition. The event honors creative talent across multiple categories, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best New Director, and the Vision Award, which acknowledges contributions to independent cinema. The acting awards make no distinction between lead and supporting roles and highlight emerging talents with the Breakthrough Actor awards.
In the film category, nominees for Best Director include Kim Hyung-joo for The Match, Nam Dong-hyeop for Handsome Guys, Bong Joon-ho for Mickey 17, Woo Min-ho for Harbin, Jang Jae-hyun for Exhuma, and Hur Jin-ho for A Normal Family.
Best Screenplay nominees include Kim Hyung-joo and Yoon Jong-bin for The Match, Park Ri-woong for The Land of Morning Calm, Bong Joon-ho for Mickey 17, Oh Jung-min for House of the Seasons, and Jang Jae-hyun for Exhuma.
The Best Actress category features Kim Go-eun (Love in the Big City and Exhuma), Kim Jae-hwa (Blesser), Shin Hae-sun (Following), and Yang Hee-kyung (The Land of Morning Calm).
Yoo Ah-in earned his Best Actor nomination for The Match, alongside Robert Pattinson (Mickey 17), Yoon Joo-sang (The Land of Morning Calm), Lee Byung-hun (The Match), and Choi Min-sik (Exhuma).
Yoo was sentenced to one year in prison last September for habitual drug use. However, he was released in February after an appellate court granted him a suspended sentence.
